SXSW: American Bang

16 March 2010 One Comment

The members of Southern rocker quartet American Bang have been friends since high school, but didn’t start making music together until 2005. Five years later, the Nashville natives have steadily gained notoriety, playing most of the major national music festivals and openings for big names like ZZ Top and The Pretenders. Their music also attracted the attention of legendary producer Bob Rock, who produced their eponymous debut album to be released later this spring on Reprise Records. Until then, you can listen to the first single off this album, “Wild & Young,” which was released on March 8th.

Quick! What’s the first thing that pops in your head when you think of:

-Boston?
The Paradise Rock Club

-Chicago?
Wind

-Nashville?
Awesomeness

-Austin?
Lone Star beer

How do you think your city has contributed to the national music scene?

Well, I think it is pretty obvious how Nashville has contributed when you look at the billboard top 10 albums and 6 out of the 10 are out of Nashville. We’ve come a long way from just being the country music capitol!

What’s the best part about being a musician in your city?

Constantly learning from the other players… The level of play is extremely high in Nashville and it seems every time I go to a show or to a session, I learn 10 new tricks to use!

What’s the best non-musical part about your city?

Pat Martin’s BBQ , Las Palmas Mexican, southern hospitality, traffic ain’t bad.

What’s one group (other than yourself!) from your city that you think the whole world should know about? Why?

Right now in Nashville there are a couple bands I’m super excited about. Kyle Andrews is probably one of the most talented dudes in town. He produces and rights all his own stuff and it’s rad! The Ettes are a kick ass 3-piece, with such a great vibe, and to top it off their drummer’s name is Poni. The Jane Shermans are another kick ass 3-piece with great, great songs.

Who are you excited to check out at SXSW? Why?

I honestly haven’t looked at the line-ups but I heard that Muse is playing. That will be killer I’m sure.

Who are you most excited to share the stage with at the EWR/TPB showcase? Why?

Also haven’t seen the line-up but I think Jane Shermans are playing and they always rock it!
