(Another) New Wave: Boston’s Endless Wave

9 March 2010 No Comment

The imagery of waves is one of the strongest in music, from the way sound is visualized on a longitudinal wave, to how a crowd seems to bounce and ripple when a song really hits it’s stride. Ocean waves are cyclical, crashing in and roiling back out. Truly good albums–the kind that only get better with every listen regardless of when they were recorded–find a way to envelope a listener in waves from the speaker, eliciting a new response every time.

So, it is only appropriate that Boston bandmates Tim Ryan, Andre Obin and Tucker Dawson are called Endless Wave. Formed in 2009, the band’s single “Last Phase” has already gotten airplay on WFNX’s New England Product show and on WZBC.  Add to that nods from both the Boston Phoenix’s and the Boston Globe’s “Bands to Watch in 2010″ lists, and the band is off to smashing start. Guitarist Tim Ryan took some time out for some quick Q&A to talk about their upcoming show at The Good Life and what’s next.

Tell us a little bit about the band.

Andre Obin (bass, vocals) and I started playing music together about a year and a half ago. We started collaborating when I worked with him on a side project of Matters & Dunaway. After a few different line-up changes, we found the right fit with drummer Tucker Dawson, who practiced in the same rehearsal space as us. We all live in the Cambridge area and rehearse in an old paper factory outside of Union Square known as Compound 440. You’ll probably pick up on this when you hear us, but we’re all heavily schooled and influenced by the UK sound: Radiohead, The Verve, Bloc Party, My Bloody Valentine, etc…

Is this one of the first rock shows Good Life is doing? If so, how did you decide on Good Life for a venue, since it’s mostly known for dance nights?

The Good Life wasn’t always a dance club. Originally it used to be an old, grimy blues and jazz club. Bands used to play in the basement every night of the week and you can still find acts playing every Tuesday–and it has been a desire of mine for a while to pull off a basement show. What better basement in the city than the Good Life? When I heard the Bodega Girls did really well on New Years Eve, I started talking to owner and friend Peter Fiumara about getting my band in there. I knew if I could get another hot local band and a DJ together, it could be awesome.

Do you produce and mix all your own songs?

A while back, Andre took the reigns and engineered some demos for us. A welcome surprise was one of our singles “Last Phase” getting picked up for WFNX’s New England Product on Sunday nights. Home recordings are great and all, but we knew we had a special sound that needed to be captured the right way and knew we had to take things to the next level.

Are you looking for a label?

We’re not not looking for a label. There’s a lot of pitfalls and surprises that happen when you work with a major label. Having said that, we’ve started talking to a few people locally interested in helping us out with some label-like activities as we are now getting off the ground. However, a booking agent would be a welcome addition to our team.

When and where are you recording with Paul Kolderie and how did you get hooked up with him?

We started work with Paul Kolderie at Camp Street Studios a couple weeks ago. Camp Street is the same studio space as the legendary Fort Apache. Wikipedia has a whole history of the place worth checking out that will give you the idea of the amazing, inspiring room you are in.  So when we started looking around for a place to record, it’s gonna sound funny, but I just picked up the phone and asked if they would like to work with us. After sending some of our demos over, we started a dialog that has led to a major recording experience. We hope to have our first EP with them pressed in the next few months.

What other shows do you have in the future?

We’re playing the Pill at Great Scott on April 17th and are looking into some future New York opportunities.

Endless Wave, Viva Viva and DJ Michael V (The Pill) play a 21+ show at Good Life on Wednesday, March 10.
