‘Make It New’ At The Middlesex Lounge, Thursday Dec 17th
This Thursday at Middlesex Lounge, BassTown presents dance night Make It New. TeaParty got the lowdown from organizer and DJ, David Day, who’s been throwing this party every week for 5 years now (“Something like 250 nights, which is an insane number when I think about it.”).
“Make It New, as the name says, is designed to keep dance music new to the ears, hands and feet,” he told us. “The ‘it’ in Make It New, though, is the music: house music and techno music. Also, while we emphasize the new, there’re plenty of classics– but they might be updated with a new remix or production.”
“We’re different than other nights in that we focus mostly on European club music, specifically cutting-edge producers from Germany, France and the rest of mainland Europe. “Ibiza is one thing,” David explained, “The huge clubs in Hamburg, Barcelona and London are quite another. Those are what we’re all about, the newest manifestations of the classic definitions of dance music.”
The night is consistently held in a dark room, lubricated by some of the best bartenders in Boston. “We’re lucky to have Middlesex put up with our bumping beats our international guests and the manic crowd that can sometimes descend,” David said, “We also don’t do much in the way of visuals. We’ve never really done them and when you already are dealing with music that people aren’t familiar with, we’d rather have them listening intently. For us, visuals work best when the music is more accessible; it gives your senses something else to do. We want darkness, it helps people hear better.
Besides different weekly guests, Make It New has six resident DJs. David explains: “Myself and Baltimoroder have been there from the start. Alan Manzi came on board early, and about two years ago we added the dynamic duo from what was “Slumber Party,” DJezus and Die Young. DJ Volvox has always been a friend of the night. Her commitment to techno knows no bounds. It’s been through different iterations over time, founder Billy Kiely hung up his headphones for a spell and Mike Uzzi has long moved to NYC but, in the end, the night is still what is has always been about: Bringing the latest and coolest club sounds to the warm ears and hearts of the Middlesex Lounge Thursday crowd.”
This Thursday’s guest is Insideout (aka Grant Aaron). “He made a name for himself right here in the US (Atlanta to be exact) but, like many other US producers, moved to Berlin to fulfill his destiny,” David tells us. “He’s been back repeatedly to New York for parties like Minimoo, Reboot and the Bunker. Been all over the world, but it’s his first time in Boston. We’re always happy to host another rising star! And if you haven’t heard the new bassbins kick at Middlesex, Insideout will be putting them to a real test!”
