TPB Loves: Punkystyle and the Haberdash

I follow a lot of fashion blogs. A lot of fashion blogs. Nothing gets me more sartorially inspired than daily outfit posts from ladies who are looking fierce 24/7, especially on a local scale. Amy “Punky” Chase is one of these ladies. A real mover and shaker in the online fashion community, her blog PunkyStyle has been not only featured in local publications like The Improper Bostonian and Stuff, but listed among the favorites of other style blogging heavyweights. Punky’s place in the upper echelon of web fashionistas was secured with her inclusion in Modepass’ Traveling Heimstone and Traveling Eple & Melk projects. Each time, one jacket was shipped around the world to 12 different internet stylemakers, including some of my personal faves Betty, Elinkan and Liebmarlene, along with Ms. Chase herself.
Most recently, Punky’s been making waves locally with her budget-friendly clothing swaps and the inception of the Haberdash, her vintage airstream trailer-turned-vintage boutique. I recently stopped by Jamaica Plain’s South St. to catch the Haberdash in action and chat up Punky about her vintage clothing empire in the making. And, in case you were wondering, all the stuff inside the trailer really does get messed up driving all over New England.

So in your own words, what’s the back story on PunkyStyle? What inspired you to start a blog?
A friend of mine was doing some website development stuff for school back in 2005, And said he offered to created a style blog for me so that I can connect to girls with a interest in fashion and vintage. Being not so web savvy myself, I jumped at the chance.
Can you explain the name “Punky”? My mom used to call me Punky when I was little because of my obsession with Ms. Brewster… did you have a similar experience?
Punky was a childhood nickname. My clothes never matched and I was always wearing something odd or quirky. It derived from that and never went away. ‘Til this day most people don’t even know my real name.
Who inspires you? What other fashion blogs do you read (either Boston-based or otherwise)?
I love DaddyLikey, she is so witty and adorable. And Bleach Black is pretty rad these days. Locally, New Brahmin keeps me up to date with all the sales and events.
Do have a style idol (celebrity or “real person”)?
I don’t really have time to focus on celebrity style. I love people who have their own thing going on and don’t cave to the norm. Sounds corny, but my Grandmother is a huge inspiration to me. She always manages to accessorize beautifully even in her old age. She taught me every thing I know about being classy and the importance of accessories.
What’s your “uniform”, your go-to look for everyday wear?
Slashed up jeans and Vintage sequin tops. I work at a rock club so my outfits can get a little wild.
Where do you go when you NEED something to wear? You suddenly have this killer event to go to tonight, you run to….?
Garment District or Artifaktori, I have a huge fear of showing up to a event wearing the same dress as someone…so I always go the vintage route.
Where is your favorite place to shop in Boston? You wear a lot of vintage… Where’s your favorite place to get it?
Dame has a gorgeous store. I want to buy every thing in there. I checked out 40 South last weekend for the first time and she had some rad pieces. I cant wait to go back.
What neighborhood do you think has the best style and why?
I don’t spend to much time in neighbor hoods to judge, but I’m always impressed with the style at the SOWA Market, the South End has some stylish peeps.
How did Haberdash come about? What came first, the trailer or the idea?
The Idea. The idea came when I was outgrowing my vintage storage and Etsy was getting old. I wanted to open a store, but I couldn’t find anything unique, or worth putting money into. My friends and I were talking about road tripping and following our favorite bands on tours and selling Vintage out of my car. Just silly drunk talk really, And then the next day I was bidding on vintage trailers on eBay. I have silly ideas like that all the time– for months I wanted to open a restaurant that sold bacon to go. But none of my friends would back me on that one. [Uh, we'd totally get behind that one. - Ed.]
What do you see in Haberdash’s future?
The beauty of the Hab is I can work as much or as little as I want. I think we will do some private parties, head to SOWA, maybe do some events with some rad bands and Launch a online store for the winter. I want to have fun with it. Last month I turned down the retail space I’ve always dreamed off because I couldn’t give up on the Hab before she had her chance to shine. This is something I put my heart and soul into, It feels really good to have it so well received.
